Hi, I’m Andy.
I grew up in a small town on the shore of Lake Ontario that was a long drive from anywhere. As a kid I had a lot of time to stare out the car window and wonder about the lives of the people living and working in the houses, barns, workshops and stores that we’d pass along the way. Based on the glimpse of a person in the yard walking from their car I’d imagine a story of what they were doing and how long they lived or worked there and the buildings around them naturally had a part to play in that story. In time I realized that some of these buildings had stood for decades and in fact had their own stories to tell in which the current residents were only a small part.
In architecture school my most successful projects were those that focused on the individual using the space I was designing rather than some high-minded esoteric concept. I’ve carried this focus through my practice whether I’m working on a mudroom renovation, an entirely new house, an office or a childcare center. I love to design around people and that’s what Hinterspace Architecture is based on.
Design for you, with the help of my good dog Fred.
Hinterspace operates from a historic building on the north edge of Natick Massachusetts on the traditional land of the Nipmuc, Pawtucket and the Massa-adchu-es-et peoples.
We’ll work wherever there’s an interesting project.
